This package will take you to one of the most laid back island villages in Belize, Caye Caulker. It also includes snorkeling the Hol Chan Marine Reserve aboard a traditional Belizean wooden sailboat as well as a tour with Ras Creek, one of the most colorful characters on the island. Caye Caulker is located off the northern coast of the country, just south of Ambergris Caye. The village, with its sandy streets, trendy beach bars and colorful houses, is a cool and relaxed place. Everything is at a walking distance, and you'll see travelers and locals alike strolling along the streets and shoreline. In fact, you can walk the enire lenght of the village in about 25 minutes. One of the main hang-out spots is the Split, a channel that cuts the island in two. You can swim here, drop a fishing line or enjoy a drink at the Lazy Lizard, a bar perched right beside the water here. There are many interesting characters in the village as well. Chocolate is a 70 year old man who is still high in spirits and is often seen walking down front street with his white moustache. He established Swallow Caye as a marine reserve to protect the endangered Manatee. Another coloful character is Ras Creek, a bohemian-like Rastafarian who does a popular snorkeling tour of the Caye Caulker Marine Reserve on his eccentric tug boat, the Heritgae Cruise. Overall, Caye Caulker is a small and very laid-back island with colorful and warm people.

This seafront resort is filled with color. Orange dominates the exterior while reds and yellows accent the interiors. The colors are contrasted by wood grains and thatch. The rooms surround the central pool, with a view of the sea, with the courtyard dotted by a few coconut trees. It’s a small comfortable resort and well decorated. There’s a small collection of books near the front desk and above the bar there is a nice lounge that overlooks the pool. Overall, it offers great value and a nice change from the rustic guesthouse that dominate the island.
This 4 story condo-style apartment building is just a few steps from the Split, the main hang-out spot on the island, where you can swim, sunbath or enjoy a few drinks at the Lazy Lizard bar. All the rooms, come with a kitchenette and a balcony facing the sea. The roof of the building is an open deck with a small palapa and beach chairs. From here you will get nice panoramic views of the village and Split. You can even arrange with the front desk to have a local cook prepare a nice meal in your room. Overall, it is a good option for enjoying a few days on the island.
TOURS
Hol Chan Marine Reserve & Shark Ray Alley Snorkeling aboard a Traditional Belizean Wooden Sailboat
This tour offers a fun filled day of sailing and snorkeling. The sailboat is a traditional wooden monohull painted in bright colors. You will set sail from the island and head north to a popular snorkeling spot called Coral Gardens. As the name implies there are lots of coral heads here with plenty of reef fish. Then you will jump into Shark Ray Alley where you can swim with nurse sharks and southern sting rays. Next you will snorkel Hol Chan’s main snorkeling site where you will see plenty of large fish and colorful corals. You will usually head back to the island just in time to catch a nice sunset while lounging on the sailboat’s deck. The tour lasts a full day.
This tour is as much about the area around Caye Caulker as it is about your tour guide, Rass Creek, a Rastifarian with a memorable and colorful character. To begin with, your unconventional tour boat is an old wooden motor boat painted in bright colors, with a thatched roof palapa on top and many interesting and eccentric objects onboard. First stop is the Caye Caulker Marine Reserve where you can swim and even hold nurse sharks and stingrays. The guide even has names for them! Next you will head to the back of the island to see iguanas and seahorses. At the end, if you ask, your guide will even play a few Reggae beats on his drums.
